Letter

Always attach a covering letter to support any CV application. Covering letters introduce you as an individual and your CV as a sales document. It should follow the recognised format of three to four paragraphs.

Good applications are brief, enthusiastic and alive. They are informative, arousing, comprehensive and succinct. A good way of securing a position without facing competition is through a speculative covering letter.

Please note that speculative covering letters should be addressed to an individual capable of making decisions. The letter should be signed in your own hand writing.

Dear Mr / Mrs . .

First paragraph
Say what position you are applying for and how you heard of the vacancy (if it was advertised).

Second paragraph
Add five or six lines detailing your experience and relative skills for the job. Include figures and statistics if possible.

Final paragraph
This last paragraph should be no more than three lines and needs to be very enthusiastic. Say what you have to offer the company and where you would like to be in the future.

Finish
Finish with one line on a positive note such as "I look forward to your reply". Then "Yours sincerely."

Keep the letter as brief as possible and avoid the temptation to waffle. Make the person who is reading your letter have an easy job. The less there is to read, the higher the chances of them reading it.
